Maintenance and Care of Steel Buckles

In this video, Brian talks about our buckle finish and provides steel buckle care information. Written information is provided below.

Caring for your Steel Buckle:

  • Maintenance and care of steel buckles:
  • Our steel buckles are treated with a high quality solution that produces a beautiful dark finish and acts to inhibit the formation of rust.
  • However, steel is a material that, by its very nature, has the potential to oxidize and produce surface rust over time, especially if exposed to water, sweat, body moisture, etc.
  • Buckles need to be kept dry. Do not wear your buckle against your skin as the metal may interact with your body chemistry.
  • To prevent a surface rust or film from developing, occasionally (once a month to six weeks) apply a very light coating of any synthetic motor oil and gently buff dry. You can also use WD-40.
  • Over time, should your buckle need to be re-polished, cleaned or re-blued, we're happy to do that for the cost of return shipping and insurance. Contact us for more information.
  • To polish the metal overlays, a jeweler's polishing cloth works well (do not use on the steel).  You can also use a small dab of ketchup on a soft cloth for copper and brass, but again, do not get it on the steel.
